Wilbur Satterfield Obituary

On July 31, 1940 at 3 a.m. in San Antonio, Texas Wilbur Hunter Satterfield was born to Oddie V. and Wilma Satterfield. He was the 2nd of 5 children born to that union.

Wilbur joined the New Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at an early age. He was baptized there by the late Rev. V.M. Bailey and grew in his faith alongside his family.

He attended Booker T. Washington Elementary, Douglas Middle School, and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1958. Throughout his academic career, Wilbur remained on the honor roll, and is noted for being the President of his high school senior class. He also had accolades of being an accomplished athlete, affectionately known by classmates and added to his name in the class yearbook as “Candylegs!” One of his greatest attributes was his ability to brighten up any room with his infectious laugh and contagious sense of humor. He was well loved and admired by all who knew him.

On April 13, 1960 at the age of 19 he married his high school sweetheart Luberda Patrick. To this union 3 children were born, Wilbur Hunter Satterfield Jr., Tambra Shae Satterfield, and Michael DuShon Satterfield.

His family and those who employed him and were employed with him knew Wilbur to be a hardworking man. His job history dates back to his childhood when he and his brother Archie created an entrepreneurial lawn service. He moved from cutting lawns to bagging groceries at Handy Andy’s, and from bagging to being a personal chauffeur for the owner of Maxwell Myers Music Distribution Company, and finally to being hired in 1973 as a Switchman-Brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad. He retired after 40 years as a railroad Conductor in 2009.

He was proceeded in death by his father Oddie V. Satterfield Sr., his Mother Wilma Satterfield, his Sister Dannie Lee Satterfield Hicks, his Brother Oddie V. Satterfield Jr., and his Brother Archie Howard Satterfield.
