On November 22, 1943, Wayne Curtis Mitchell was born to Ella L. Gary Mitchell and Hazel Ramsey in Braddock, PA. He was the third oldest of eleven children.
He completed his education through the Braddock Public School District and graduated in 1962 from Braddock High School. After graduation, he enlisted into the United States Navy, with the permission of his mother due to the age limit.
Wayne transitioned to his basic training location at the Meridian Naval Air Station in Meridian, Mississippi, which is where he met and courted the love of his life, Madge Jemison. He was baptized into Christ in 1964. Wayne and Madge were united in holy matrimony on March 28, 1964 in her parents' living room. To this union was born their only daughter, Jacqueline Deanna Mitchell.
After Jacqui was born, Wayne and his family were stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Norfolk, Virginia; Oakland, CA and San Diego, CA, where he retired in October 1982 after serving 20 years in the Navy. While living in San Diego, Madge and Jacqui became faithful and consistent members of the 61st and Division Street Church of Christ. Initially, Wayne wasn't a faithful member but after several months the Holy Spirit touched his heart to grow a closer relationship with Christ and he began to attend, worship, work and serve in the church. At the suggestion of Sister Lois McKenzie to her husband, Minister Taylor McKenzie and the leadership, Wayne was ordained as a deacon in 1980 at the 61st and Division Street Church of Christ, where he faithfully served as a deacon for 35 years.
In April 2015, Wayne and Madge moved to San Antonio, Texas, where they were faithful members of the Liberty View Church of Christ. The Lord called Wayne home to glory on Thursday, March 19, 2020.
He's proceeded in death by his mother, Ella Mitchell Jackson; father, Hazel Ramsey; brothers, Edward Theodore (Teddy) Mitchell, Johnny Green, Paul M. Jackson, Gregory E. Jackson and Mark D. Jackson and his favorite aunt "B" Beatrice and uncle Hayword Woods.
Wayne leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Madge Jemison Mitchell; daughter, Jacqueline Deanna Mitchell Young Turner; grandson, Arthur Armand Young; great granddaughter, McKenzie Denise Walk; brothers, Bruce (Dottie) Jackson, Roderick (Connie) Ramsey, Phillip Jackson, Richard Jackson and Aaron Jackson; sister, Madelyn Headen; only surviving aunt, Jeanette Stanton; favorite cousin, Anthony McCelland; childhood best friend, Tommy Jackson (Anthony, Tommy and Wayne were known as the 3 amigos); favorite niece, Arlene Randolph and a host of nieces, nephews and relatives.
Due to the current Coronavirus pandemic, a memorial service would be held at a later date.
