THELMA BARNES

September 4, 1933 ~ January 6, 2025

Thelma Lee Barnes was born to the late John Wright Sr. and Sadie Wright on  September 4, 1933 in Liberty, Texas. Thelma was the middle child of two siblings. She graduated from Liberty Colored School.

Thelma attended Prairie View A&M University where she met the love of her life Carnegie Barnes Jr. The two joined in holy matrimony on September 7, 1952. From their blessed union they had Five daughters: Shirley, Linda, Gloria, Gwendolyn and Cornelia.

Thelma was a housewife in the earlier parts of their marriage raising her daughters. She worked at the Houston Chronicle Newspaper in Houston, she later went to work at AAA (American Automobile Association) in San Antonio where she was a Travel Advisor and later retired after 22 years.

She was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church for several years and later joined Eastwood Community Missionary Baptist Church.

Thelma had a relationship and peace with our Heavenly Father and was a proud member at Eastwood Community Missionary Baptist Church. She looked forward to Sundays to get all dressed up and go to church to worship the Lord.

On January 6, 2025, Thelma was called home to be with our Lord. She was preceded in death by her Father John Wright Sr., mother Sadie Wright, husband Major Carnegie Barnes Jr., sister Lucille Daniels, daughter Shirley Smith, and daughter Linda Roberts.

Thelma’s legacy is survived by children: Gloria Jefferson (Douglas), Gwendolyn Reed (Wallace) and Cornelia Scott, brother John Wright Jr.

Ten grandchildren: Shirron Guillory, Roshawn Marshall, Ronald Guillory Jr., Nichole Roberts Holloway, Andrew Roberts Jr., Jennifer Jefferson, Joshua  Jefferson , Jessica Reed, Denise Matthews and Tiffany Starling. Fifteen great grandchildren: Andre McDonald, Christopher Marshall, Amon Marshall, Solomon Marshall, Bianca Gonzales and Courtney Roberts, Ainsley Roberts, Parker Roberts, Kais, Edward, Zam, Aden Starling, Aubrey Starling, and Aceson Starling, Nevaeh Jefferson.

Nine Great great grandchildren and a host of cousins, friends and fellow church members.

Thelma Barnes’s Kindness and Gentle Spirit will live on Forever. While she will be greatly missed, the Family is rejoiced in knowing She is with our Heavenly Father.

We will Forever Cherish the Memories and Celebrations of our Lives Together.
