Rudolph Flowers was born in Bartlett, Texas, on October 20, 1933, son to the late Myrtle Flowers. He was educated in the Bartlett, Texas school district, and during the era of school segregation attended the Bartlett Colored School where he met his wife Doretta Flowers. Rudolph and Doretta Flowers united in Holy Matrimony on May 3, 1952. Shortly after marriage he and Doretta (Bartlett Colored School Valedictorian) received their high school diplomas during the commencement exercises held May 26, 1952. For the next 62 years in marriage he dedicated his life to their union and rearing of five children.
For advancement and to provide opportunities for his family, Rudolph enlisted in the United States Air Force on June 17, 1952. His military service allowed him, and his family to travel the world. Rudolph retired September 1, 1975 with over 20 years and served as a Tactical Fighter and Technical Sergeant. He also had over 20 years of Civilian Service with the United States Army where he worked as a Photographer. As part of his advancement he further cultivated his photography by attending the Winona International School of Photography in Mt. Prospect, IL.
Rudolph’s life’s journey was one of strength, resiliency and perseverance. He was a dedicated son, husband, father and soldier. As a man of integrity and principle, Rudolph was well respected for his loyalty, courageousness, his selfless service, hard work and toughness. But through it all his most valuable life assignment was his dedication to his family. He was a steadfast provider, encourager and protector. His family first approach pioneered the way for his children and grandchildren to attend college, become entrepreneurs, working professionals and most importantly become exceptional parents.
Rudolph Flowers, 85, of San Antonio, Texas, was called to his heavenly home on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. He is preceded in death by his wife, Doretta Flowers; son, Michael Eric Flowers; mother, Myrtle Flowers; and siblings Gladys Nell Foster, Sim Turner, Nettie Burleson. He leaves to cherish his memory four children; Rudolph Flowers, Jr., Kevin Mark Flowers and Rodney Flowers who all reside in San Antonio, Texas and Darlene Marie Flowers Mathonican of Fort Worth, Texas. He is also survived by a host of loving grandchildren, including Erik Flowers for whom he raised, great grandchildren and relatives.
