Robert Freelon Jr. was born February 1, 1936 in San Antonio, TX to Robert Freelon and Bernice Gist. He was the third child of this union. His mother passed away in child birth and he was reared by his Uncle and Aunt, Jessie and Geneva Williams who preceded him in death. His education pursuits were at Phyliss Wheatley High School and St. Philips College.
As a young man, Robert enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a mastered chief cook and was honorably discharged August 1960. He united in holy matrimony to Shirley J. Lee on March 26, 1963. To this union four children were born. Although he was born in San Antonio, TX, he spent his younger years in Kennedy, TX before making his permanent hometown. He worked hard providing for his family, working at the Frank J Dobie Post Office where he worked as a carrier technician.
He joined Manasseh Shalom Ministries under the leadership of Elder Fred Fluckers Sr. As a faithful member of Manasseh Shalom, he served as the official cooked for the congregation. He served faithfully until his health begin to fail.
Robert was blessed to live a full and long life. He had a love for golf and cooking. Every Sunday, he would rise up early, cook breakfast, dinner and leave for his weekly golf game. He was known for his catering called Freelander’s. His family will never forget the many tender briskets that were served during family gatherings. Robert was a jack of all trades. He was a loving and giving person. He would always give his grandchildren money. He always had jokes and phrases and one of the most common “behind that preposition.”
Robert leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 58 years, Shirley J. Freelon, son, Tyrome S. Freelon, Colorado Springs, Co., daughter, Veronica J. Godley (Kevin); daughter, Yolanda Y.
