Mr. Raymond Archie Murphy, son of the late Reverend Raymond Murphy, Sr. and Ethel Hines Murphy was born July 14, 1939 in Wilson, North Carolina. He was a member of Trinity A.M.E Church. He attended the public schools of Wilson County and was a graduate of Charles H. Darden High School where he played on the football team.
After high school, Raymond decided to serve his country by enlisting in the Air Force. He had the opportunity to travel the world and meet many people. Finally, he moved to San Antonio, Texas and was stationed at Kelly Air Force Base where he married his wife Bettye Dismuke Murphy in 1973. After 20 years of service and receiving several awards, he retired as a Tech Sergeant in 1980.
Raymond wanted to make a difference in his community; therefore, he decided to enroll at Our Lady of the Lake University to major in Social Work. After completion of his Bachelor’s degree in 1982, he obtained his Master’s degree in Social Work in 1984. After graduation, he became the Director of Social Services at the Crestheaven Children’s Center; he then worked for Baptist Medical Center, Ella Austin Community Center, E.T. Dixon Health Clinic, Paragon Home Care Corporation as a Social Worker/Case Manager. He loved his patients and enjoyed being a mentor for others.
Everyone will always remember Raymond’s smile and his spirit. He enjoyed sharing his stories of his time in the military, sports, traveling, his cars, and his love for music. His influence will be forever in our lives for those who knew him. He quietly departed this life Saturday, October 26, 2019 in Schertz, TX. He was preceded in death by his siblings John Murphy, Robert Murphy, Hall Murphy, twin brother Ralph Murphy, Mary Hines, Esther Murphy Dixon, Grace Hines Porter, and Jean Hines Wood.
To cherish his beautiful life, he leaves behind his wife, Bettye Dismuke Murphy and their daughter (Pamela Murphy Cook) and his daughter (Valerie Murphy) from his first wife, the late Mary Pettie Wright. His granddaughter Laila Cook (Pamela), aunt Mary L. Hines of Greensboro, NC; siblings James Murphy of Wilson, NC; Lindwood Murphy of Oklahoma City, OK, and Jennie Murphy Hampton of Greenvile, NC; a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
