Robert Venning Johnson was born on the bright day of March 27th 1935 in Mount Pleasant,
South Carolina. He was one of two sons born to Andrew and Loretta Johnson. At a young age Bobby's
(as he was lovingly called), parents moved to New York. In New York, he pursued his two passions:
music and the military.
He was called into the military in 1951; joining the Army in Albany, New York. His
Enlistment with the Army was a career choice that lasted twenty-five years. While serving in the
military he rose in ranks to become an E-8 Master Sargent, Vietnam Veteran, and highly decorated
serviceman at that. While in the military he received several medals and accommodations: A Bronze
Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Accommodation Medal, Civil Actions Medal First Class,
Expert Field Medical Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, (7th award),
Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Decorated Rifleman Award, NCO Professional
Development (3), Mechanic with bar, and the National Defense Service Medal.
Robert Johnson met the love of his life, Dorothea Woodley of whom he wed October 8th 1966,
in New Hampshire. Together they raised three children: Shawne Ricks, (Joan), Russell Ricks, and
Brenda Bain, (Wilton). While serving in the military these two traveled extensively to such places as
Canada, Germany, France, South Korea, Washington State, and Utah, finally retiring in San Antonio,
Texas. Bobby Johnson was a highly skilled, well known musician and singer. He played lead guitar
and could sing a lovely tune as well.
Brother Johnson accepted The Lord as His Savior at an early age. He was a member of Greater
Ball Tabernacle Church where he served on the trustee board, played lead guitar, and sang with the
Men of Ball, as well as the Chancel Choirs. The Johnson's were married fifty-four years. Together they
enjoyed traveling, good music, delicious meals, warm moments spent with friends and family, and
sweet communion with loved ones at church. Brother and Sister Johnson together have enjoyed life,
and have always sought to make the best of it. One of his favorite scripture verses was Psalms 23. And
we are comforted in knowing that he is resting beside the quiet streams with Our Savior and Shepherd,
Jesus Christ.
Brother Johnson leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife, Dorothea Johnson, sons:
Shawne (Joan) Ricks, and Russell Ricks, his daughter, Brenda (Wilton) Bain, and his granddaughter,
Brandy Wilson; along with a host of other relatives, and friends.
Robert V. Johnson was an honorable man, faithful husband and father, loyal serviceman, warm and
loving friend, and•a kind hearted follower of Christ. You have served well in all capacities Brother
Johnson, now take your rest. We look forward to someday reuniting with you in Heavens glory.
Well done thy good and faithful servant, well done!
