Mary Henrietta Young was born January 19,1924 in Gonzales, Texas to Will and Alzada Steen the youngest of eight children. She graduated from Phyllis Wheatley
High School and Tillotson college in Austin. After completing courses in cosmetology, she found her true calling that she really loved and worked several
years in Alamo Heights at John Moore's for Hair and Madison's Hair Salon. She was an active member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary at Holy
Redeemer Catholic Church for over forty five years and always offered her services to the community to the community and church.. Also, every year she would ride
the bus to volunteer at the Raul Jimenez thanksgiving Dinner to help serve because she really enjoyed being around people.
Mary was a avid pet lover with a knack for caring for all types of animals. At one time, we had four dogs, a cat, turtle and goldfish. The one positive note we didn't
have to worry about burglers. She also found time to garden and had to stop her from mowing her lawn in her eighties.
Mary's greatest achievement was making sure her children and grandchildren learn how to swim. Even at the time of segregation, a few months before civil rights bill
was signed she took her children, niece and nephew to San Pedro pool and gave the attendant the name of one her rich customers in Alamo Heights and was given a
section of the pool. No one confronted her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and one grandchild.
She leaves to mourn her daughter Diane Moore (Edward) and son Joe G. Young Jr as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
