February 22, 1941 ~ November 29, 2023 (age 82) 82 Years Old

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.  A time to be born:  Our beloved Mother, Mrs. Laura Maybelle Blakey was born into the union of our grandparents, the late Jimmie Lee White and Flora Geneva Hayes on February 22, 1941, in Hillsboro, IL; and a time to die: In the comfort of home, surrounded by the love and passionate care, Mama transitioned into eternal rest on November 29, 2023.  A time to plant:  Seed of righteousness fell on the soil of Mama’s heart at a very young age, and she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior.  In the mature seasons of her walk with Christ, she became an active member at Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Newport, IL where she invested time as a Sunday School teacher, training up young soldiers for Christ.  She later joined Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis, MO where she served faithfully for over 50 years.  Her willing workers’ heart was presented through her unfailing dedicated service on the Usher Board and Repast Committee.

Mama was educated at Madison High School in Illinois; she graduated in the class of 1959.

During her seasons of laughter and dancing, seeds of love and great joy were planted in her heart for Mr. Clyde Napoleon Blakey.  The two became one through the union of holy matrimony on January 16, 1960.  They traveled throughout the states together during his military service.  They later moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1968.  Their lives blossomed to embrace their growing family and community.

Mama was indeed a Proverbs 31 woman.  She was a woman who demonstrated her faith, virtue, and love for God, her family and her community.  She was a great cook and seamstress.  She especially loved cooking for her family.  Mama had an eye for fashion and enjoyed designing beautiful clothing apparel.  She was also an entrepreneur for over thirty years altering clothes, designing prom dresses, wedding and bridal gowns, and evening dresses for women.  She loved all her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.

Mama was employed with A.G. Edwards Brokerage Firm for 22 years and she retired in 2000.  She proudly joined an organization in St. Louis honoring the nation’s first African American Marines who were stationed at Montford Point, NC.  The organization conducted community service, hosted lots of events to raise funds and provided scholarships to Black students pursuing a college education.  From the garden of her life, she has truly produced fruits that remain.

A time to weep:  We are saddened to say that our dad, and devoted husband of 63 years, Clyde Napoleon Blakey; grandparents, Jimmie Lee White and Flora Geneva Hayes-Turner; and three brothers, Theodore Russell Turner, Jr., Gregary A. Turner, Sr., and Jimmie Donnell White have all proceeded Mama in death.  A time to laugh:  Mama’s heart was always filled with laughter and joy in the company of her children, grandchildren and family.  She took great pride in seeing the fruits produced from the works of her gifted hands.  Her heart always expressed genuine passion as she poured her gifts into the service of the Lord and His people through ministry and community services.

A time to mourn:  Hearts are heavy and filled with sorrow as memories of Mama will be remembered by her five children:  Clyde Pratt, Aberdeen, NC, Romanita Adams (Brett), Dawn A. Jones, all of San Antonio, TX, Terrence F. Blakey, Houston, TX, and Brandon Blakey, Fresno, CA; two brothers, Mark Taylor (Michelle), Eric White, both from St. Louis, MO;  one dear sister, Anna K. Jordan (Kevin), Fairview Heights, IL, and a special cousin in love, Addie B. Randolph; 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
