Joyce Newton was born on September 8, 1928 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana her loving parents John and Lucille Cotten.
Joyce devoted her to Christ at an early age and was a dedicated member the Catholic faith. At a young age, her family moved to San Antonio, Texas where they members of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. She was proud of the monument that her father built in front of the church that still stands today. Joyce later joined St. Gerard Catholic Church where she was an active member for over 30 years and served as a Eucharistic Minister as well as ensured her children and grandchildren attended mass weekly and participated in the Catholic sacraments.
Joyce had a delightful upbringing in San Antonio. She was always surrounded by family and friends and often recalled many memories of the great times she had growing up. She graduated from St. Peter Claver High. School in San Antonio on May 23, 1947. Joyce had an intense passion to care for and serve others, which led her to work at Nix Hospital until she married and devoted her life to her family.
On January 11, 1947 Joyce married the love of her life. Carlos B. Newton, Sr. in holy matrimony. To their union, seven children were born. She was preceded in death by her husband, sisters Doris Williams and Bernadette Bass, her brother Claude Cotten, her sons John Kennedy Newton, Larry Newton, and Carlos Newton, Jr., her daughters Mary Newton, Sylvia Ann Garner, and Sandra "LuLu" Irvin. She leaves to celebrate her life one child Valencia Newton, two grandchildren, which she raised from birth as her own children. Doris Newton and Da'Shaun Newton. ten beloved grandchildren. Joyce, Tracy (and husband Eugene), Marie (and husband Cash) Gary, Kenneth, Carlos III, Paula, Amanda, Monique and Charles, twentyone great grandchildren, twenty great-great grandchildren, her favorite nephew Authur "Poppa” Dukes. a host of step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Joyce leaves a legacy of deep faith, unconditional love, service to others, acceptance and immense generosity.
