We were blessed to learn from the good, respected, and dignified life of our beloved Daddy and Pawpaw, Mr. Johnnie L. Grayer. He slipped quietly away from us on August 9 after battling several health challenges at the age of 94.He was the only son of Curtis and Elsie Octavia Grayer born on February 3, 1927 in Winchester, Texas. He accepted Christ as his savior at an early age.
After attending schools in Winchester, the Brazos Bottom, and Temple, he graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1944.Johnnie was drafted into the Army during World War II, and he served two years in the US Air Corps. On July 12, 1951, he married Lurlene Wilson, whom he was married to for 60 years. To this union three daughters were born. Johnnie worked part-time at Handy Andy grocery store. He retired after 50 years of civil service at Ft. Sam Houston, where he worked himself up from custodian to librarian assistant.
He is preceded in death by: his parents, wife, one sister( Lillie ), and numerous relatives and friends. He leaves to carry on his legacy: daughters-Lurlene Adams, Anna Grayer, and Valencia Wilkerson; grandchildren- Brandi (Stacy) Coleman, Valencia (Frederick) Mason, Arvana Wilkerson, Homer (Kaywana) Adams, and Earl (Areveoshia) Wilkerson Jr.; great grandchildren- Aubreana Wilkerson, D’Andre Wilkerson, Kiyana Glover, Jordan Rodriguez, Elijah Wilkerson, DeAnthony Glover, Dominique Rodriguez, Emanuel Wilkerson, Kaylee Adams, and Simone Adams; great great grandchildren- De’Juan Kilson and Antwon Kilson; one sister- Minnie Applewhite, and a host of loving relatives and friends.
