James Edward Collins was born November 11, 1949 in San Antonio, Texas to parents Edward and Annie (Valdes) Collins who all preceded him in death. His brother Lester; sisters Catherine, Joe Ann also preceded him in death. James attended SAISD schools and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1968, where he was a Drum Major. James met and married his high school sweetie, Gail R. Williams November 30,1974. They were the first to be married in the new Antioch Sanctuary with a packed house of over 800 attending. To this union twin daughters were born...Brandy Gail and Jamie Denise.

James was a community servant who helped with the Taste of New Orleans ZULU'S, The Citywide Senior Conference, Citywide Widow's Gala and Phillis Wheatley Alumni Association.
James became a member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in 1966 and was a member of The Mighty Men of Antioch Choir and Usher Ministry No. 1.
