HERBERT WALKER Obituary

Herbert Eugene Walker, known affectionately as Herb, peacefully passed away on March 5, 2024, in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas.

Born on October 26, 1951, to Bernice Wilson Hubbard and Johnie Walker; Herbert grew up in San Antonio, with his family roots deeply planted in Waelder, TX. Herbert was a graduate of Saint Peter Claver High School and after graduation accepted an internship with City Public Service Energy, which was the start of his illustrious 34-year career where he earned numerous work recognitions and position advancements within the organization.

Herbert retired from CPS Energy in 2005, as the Salado Street Warehouse Procurement Supervisor. Herbert met his beloved wife, Olivia Jones Miller, during a Juneteenth Celebration at Commanche Street Park. On one of their first dates, fishing in Port Aransas, he watched in disbelief Olivia hook live bait, catch, and remove fish all on her own! It was on that fishing dock that Herb professed then and there, “Girl, I’m going to marry you!!”; and that was the beginning of their 37-year love journey.

Herbert and Olivia were united in Holy Matrimony on January 17, 1987, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, officiated by the Rev. Pastor A.K. Nelson. Together they raised and cherished two beautiful children, Herbert E. Walker Jr. and Kimberly M. Brown. Herbert’s favorite pastime was fishing, BBQing and cruising in his 1967 Chevy Chevelle: as well as being an active member of the Flotilla Boating & Fishing Club and the City Public Service Retirement Association. He possessed a profoundly strong work ethic, which he exhibited throughout the course of his life. He instilled this strong work ethic in his children and encouraged them to excel and never settle in life, which has sustained them today.

Sadly, Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tommie Walker, sister Sumerity Terrell and brother-in-law, Wesley Terrell. The memories of Herbert will forever be cherished by his devoted wife, Olivia Walker, his children Herbert (Meredith) Walker Jr., Kimberly (Huey) Brown; his grandchildren, DeAndre (Galen) Walker, Cameron Walker, and Kenedi L. Brown; his great-grandchildren Dion, DeAndre Jr, and Amani. He also leaves to cherish his memories, brothers John Charles (Dorothy) Walker and Johnie (Kathy)Walker, of San Antonio, TX, and his sister Linda Wms-Moore of Houston, TX; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close relatives whom he loved and cherished dearly.
