DORIS BELVIN Obituary

Doris began her teaching career at James Whitcomb Riley Junior School. During the era of segregation, she was transferred to Sydney Lanier High School as a Social Studies teacher. She was soon promoted to counselor where she won over the love of her students and their parents, as well as staff and colleagues. She remained in this position at Lanier until she retired in 2000, after 42 years of service in the district.

Doris Jean Belvin was born on May 2, 1939 to Nathaniel and Myrtle Belvin who preceded her in death. She was the only child born to this union. She attended the public schools in the San Antonio Independent District graduating from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1957. She obtained her Associates of Arts Degree from St. Philips Jr. College, her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Huston Tillotson College in Austin, TX and her Master's Degree in Counseling from Our Lake of the Lake College.

During her tenure as an educator, Doris was affiliated with numerous organizations and associations, including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Project Stay (serving many years as state board secretary), Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA), Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA), American & South Texas Counselors Associations, APPLE, and SA WAC, as a Licensure Professional Counselor. As a Licensure/Professional Counselor, Doris received many certificates and service awards for excellence.
