Betty Evelyn Trott was born on November 19, 1933 to the late Gerald and Dorothy Trott in Paget Parish, Bermuda. She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church where she gleefully sang in the choir. She studied religiously and received excellent grades providing her an incredible opportunity to attend the Hamilton Teacher’s College in Ontario, Canada. She was one of a few outstanding students who possessed the “gold standard” and was recruited to attend on scholarship. After receiving her teachers’ certificate, Betty returned to Bermuda to teach primary at West Pembroke School. She was everyone’s favorite teacher because of her friendly and kind demeanor.
Aside from teaching, Betty worked in the commissary on the military base. Here she caught the attention of an American GI – Edgar “Mac” McFadden - who would find any opportunity to purchase random items just to see Betty. A popular girl and a proper lady, Betty did not show any interest in Mac. A proper gentleman, Edgar soon realized the way to Betty’s heart would be through her father. He showed up on her doorstep to request permission to court Betty. His kind and gentle demeanor was met with approval and the couple married on August 23, 1962.
Mac and Betty would blend their families and begin a beautiful life in Bermuda. But in 1965, military life would call them to Clinton-Sherman Air Force Base in Cordell, OK where they would welcome their third child. The family transferred to Chanute AFB in Rantoul, IL where Betty would balance being a military wife, raising three children, and teaching first grade. In 1970, the family would put down roots in San Antonio, TX and become part of the Lackland AFB community. Betty began working for the Base Exchange in Customer Service where she became Supervisor, earning numerous service awards and making life-long friendships with those she would call family.
Mac and Betty understood the key to a successful marriage and family - put God first and their union. They believed in their vows and took them to heart through good and bad times, for better or worse. They would not allow anything or anyone to get in the way of their marriage, knowing the key to raising their children began with standing firmly together on a solid foundation. Betty raised her children in church and insisted on good manners, respect for others, and being kind and considerate.
The family became members of Lackland Baptist Church in the early 70’s. After the children were grown, Betty moved her church membership to Grace First Baptist where she would ‘raise a joyful noise unto the Lord.’ Betty served in the Sanctuary Choir for over thirty years becoming the oldest choir member for some time. Her church family meant the world to her. She loved them and they loved her.
In the early 2000s, Mac was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Betty would care for him in the family home before being welcomed into the Kerrville VA Hospital where he resided for 6 years. Betty visited faithfully; to say she was a devoted wife would be an understatement. When the disease should have rendered once familiar faces as unknown, the presence of Betty would bring an immediate smile to Mac’s face and a pucker from his lips. If Betty were helping out another veteran, you could hear Mac yell out “that’s my wife!” Mac and Betty were married for 45 earthly years, but she remained devoted to him in heaven for 59 years.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar McFadden; and son, Michael Angelo McFadden. She is survived by sister Sheila Resper, daughters Wendy Dorothea Taylor and Tanya Marie McFadden; daughter-in-love Anne Masters and grandson Brandon Michael Masters; granddaughters Maya Angela McFadden and Jaimie Elizabeth Burton; and great-grandchildren Avery, Xavier, Donovan, Braylon, Trey, and Tatum; Bermuda family, extended family; and chosen family and friends
