Allen R. Cherry Sr. was born July 31, 1938, in Victoria, Texas. He was raised in a Christian household and gave his life to Christ at an early age at Palestine Baptist Church, Victoria, TX under Pastor Rev. Z. Broadus. He attended public school in San Antonio, Texas, graduating from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1956. There, he met his high school sweetheart, Algereida Ray. They married and raised 2 boys and 1 girl. As a military dependent in Germany, he excelled in athletics and was widely recognized as an exceptional basketball player. Later in life, he was renowned in the culinary arts, retiring from San Antonio City Public Services as Food Services Director.
Allen had a profound interest and comprehensive understanding of world history, and could spend hours discussing how governments operated and how societies functioned. He was also an avid Bible reader and looked forward to Bible studies at church. Coming from a musical family, Allen was an inspiring singer and was often called upon to sing in the church. Allen was a devoted deacon and a member of the church’s Board of Trustees.
Allen was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He dedicated his life to serving God and helping people. He was widely respected as a great mentor and a caring friend to all he came in contact with. He was preceded in death by his wife, Algereida, and his parents - Mt. Zion District Moderator and Pastor, Reverend B.T. Cherry and Dr. May Dell Cherry. He leaves to cherish and honor his memories, son Allen Jr. (Elaine), daughter Vicki, and son Darryl; siblings Bennie, Linda, and Ronald; 4 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and lifelong friends.
