UDELL HILL Obituary

Udell “Dell” Hubbard Hill’s sunrise was August 5, 1923, in Smithville, Texas; the youngest of four children born to Hezekiah Lee Hubbard, Sr. and Mamie Bell Hubbard.  She made her transition from this earthly life, Sunday morning, November 10, 2019.

Dell graduated from Mary A. Brown High School in Smithville, Texas in 1941.While in high school she was the captain of the women’s basketball team and was able to continue her love of playing basketball while attending Huston-Tillotson College, Austin, Texas.  She also attended Homer G. Phillips Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dell was united in marriage to Vernon Levi Hill of San Antonio, Texas on November 19, 1943.  She was a loving and supportive wife.  She took her role as a Military wife seriously, and in over 32 years of service undertook every move as a new adventure.  Her support for her husband included being an active leader in the NCO Wives club, supporting the Thrift Shop as well as her husband’s activities in Masonic and Improved, Benevolent, Protective Order of Elks of the World.  Dell was a member of the Duke and Duchess Social Club and an active member of Daughters of IBPOEW.

She was a homemaker, and devoted mother to four daughters, serving as Brownie Leader, Girl Scout Leader, homeroom mother and dedicated seamstress who ensured her daughters had beautiful outfits for every occasion.

Dell was an entrepreneur, starting Hill’s Enterprises in 1972.  She began her business selling Figurette’s Foundations and then transitioned to her jewelry business which she continued until 2008.

She developed a love for Christ and accepted Him as her Lord and Savior at an early age.  She was an active member of St. James A.M.E. Church, serving as class leader until her health curtailed her attendance.  She loved her church and serving the Lord.  She often said she would work in the church for as long as she was able.

Dell was an avid traveler who always had her passport ready.  The military afforded her the first opportunity to live outside the U.S, in England and then the Philippines; which she enjoyed immensely.  Her love and interest in sports continued throughout her life.  She enjoyed music, dancing and especially spending time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of over 50 year, her third daughter Denise Hill Griffin, her brothers, John Wesley Hubbard, Rev. Hezekiah Lee Hubbard Jr., and her beloved sister Julia Young.

Dell is survived by daughters, Sandra Hill Boykins, Vernita “Nita” Hill Van Slyke and Bettye Hill; multiple Grandchildren, Great- Grandchildren, Nieces and extended family that will sorely miss her loving support and guidance.
