Without warning death plucked a flower from our garden on May 25, 2018 and Melvin was called from Earth to Heaven’s reward.
Melvin Loyd Jeffery had many loving names—Jeffery, Daddy, Papa Jeffery, Paw-Paw, Melvin, Uncle Melvin and Baby Loyd. He was one of five children born to Hayward Jeffery Sr. and Ethanic L. Bibbins Jeffery on July 16, 1033 in Hockley, Texas. On May 25, 2018 in Fredericksburg, Virginia God said well done my good and faithful servant and called him into eternal rest at the age of 84.
Melvin accepted Christ at an early age with membership at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Hockley TX. Where he lived with his grandmother, Annie Stewart. He attended Jack Yates High School in the Houston Independent School District area.
Shortly thereafter, Melvin enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War until his Honorable Discharge. Melvin moved back to Houston where his employment was varied. While working for Sam P. Wallace Mechanical Contracting Co. where he was an intricate part of constructing “The Eighth Wonder of the World” known to many today as the Astrodome. Later he gained employment with the United States Postal Service as a Mail Carrier where he retired. Although Melvin had a plethora of jobs during his life-time, nothing compared to his love and passion for cooking. Melvin’s culinary skills led him to work in many topnotch restaurants all over the Houston area. This led Him to pursue a business for himself where he was the proprietor of his own restaurant. Throughout his life, Melvin faced many obstacles and health challenges but with God on his side he never gave up. Melvin loved his family and friends and had a great passion for cooking big dinners during the holidays and special occasions.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Hayward Jeffery St. and Ethanic L. Bibbins Jeffery, three brothers; Hayward JR., Herbert and Alvin Jeffery and two sons; Melvin Jr. and Bruce Jeffery.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife Lynda L. Johnson Jeffery of 26 fun filled years. From this union two children were born; Devon Wayland Luis and Chloe Morgan (Fredericksburg VA), daughters; Belinda S. Jeffery and Carol E. Jeffery (Houston, TX), Melba D. Sheley (Michael) Pearland, TX.. Melvin was also blessed to have a stepdaughter, Chastity Yvette Johnson (San Antonio, TX) whom he considered as one of his own. Step children; Jerry Riggins (Kathryn) and Narvel Jackson all of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren and one who he has raised and adored, Aceyon Johnson (Man); two great-grandchildren; one half-brother, Dwight Jeffery (Adele) and a sister, Helen Jeffery both of Houston TX; two sister-in-laws, Patricia Hannah (Isadore), San Antonio, TX and Kathy Jeffery, Fort Washington MD; two brother-in-laws, James Johnson (Shirley), Missiouri City TX and Allen Johnson, San Antonio, TX; special cousin, Sheila Orndorff and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
