GUSTAVIA HOUSTON Obituary

Gustavia (Gussie) Houston was born September 30, 1922 in Giddings, Texas to Carrie and Rufus Washington and enjoyed three brothers and four sisters.  She leaves to mourn her, a loving brother Elijah Washington and a sister, Veora Francis, a special niece who was like a daughter, Ruthie Hillary and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She had one child, Gracie Poe and a son-in-law Thomas Poe.  She was proud to be the matriarch of her loving blended family.  Granddaughters:  Gerri Buhl (Carl), Janet Poe, Lois Porter (David) and Gezti Griffin, adopted grandson, John Poe;  Great grandchildren: Antreshawn Buhl, Jonte Buhl, Janel Caminos, Dominique Davis (Chaz), Gabriela Ebron (Eric), David Porter III, Jonathan Porter,  adopted great grandson, Calvin John Poe; Great-great grandchildren: Jayton King, Aaliyah Jones, Jonte Buhl II, Aria Buhl, Oliver Ebron, Aiden Ebron, and Breylin Davis.

Ms. Houston (Gussie) was a very talented and gifted lady.  She was a licensed beautician, graduating from Hicks Beauty School in 1944, but also worked as a manager of school cafeterias and co-owner of G&R Beauty Haven Salon in San Antonio.

After her marriage to the late Johnny Houston, they joined Antioch Baptist Church where she was a devoted usher.  Being the loving and caring woman, she moved to Austin to help take care of his mother and joined the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she served over 30 years as an usher and hospitality/cafe volunteer.

Johnny moved Gussie back to San Antonio as promised earlier in their marriage, buying a home only 5 minutes from her daughter in 2002.  She joined Bethel AME and soon joined the usher board and the hospitality ministry.  She was one of the first Cultural Arts ministry members at Bethel; she helped develop and organize the Black History Soul Food Fest.

Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, bowling, golfing, dominoes, cards and fishing.  However; her greatest joy and excitement was having “all” of her family together on vacations at the beach and Christmas Holidays.

Gustavia Houston will be missed but never forgotten and she is now resting in the arms of our Lord and Saviour.
