Georgette M. Bess-Nicholas

U.S. Veteran

Georgette M. “Gigi” Bess-Nicholas, 66, passed away on May 26, 2013, at her home in San Antonio, Texas. Gigi was born on February 2, 1947, in St. Thomas US Virgin Islands. She was the eldest of four children born to Leo Bess and Gladys Smith.

Gigi grew up in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. There she attended St. Peter and Paul’s Church with her sisters.  A 1965 graduate of St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic School, she enlisted in the United States Army and served over twenty years completing tours in Germany, Honduras, Desert Storm and at Fort Sam Houston.  While at Fort Sam Houston assigned to the Army Medical Department Center and School, she served as a X-ray instructor and was later reassigned to the 41st Medical Support Hospital. She later retired as a Sergeant First Class.

Gigi was an avid reader.  She spent many hours reading anything she could get her hands on from cookbooks to a variety of novels.  She baked cookies, cakes and breads like none other.

After receiving a Bachelors of Science from Wayland Baptist University, she pursued a career as an educator joining the Judson Independent School District (JISD) in August 2000.  Georgette united in matrimony with Andrew Nicholas Jr on July 19, 2004.  This union joined her together with three stepchildren, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  Family was very important to her. When her contract with JISD ended in 2011, Georgette added another chapter to her life’s story by embracing a life of leisure with her husband, family and friends.  Gigi joined Harvest Time Fellowship Church in 2011 where she served in the hospitality ministry, studied the Word, praised and worshipped.

Gigi is preceded in death by her parents Leo Bess and Gladys Smith.

Gigi is survived by her husband Andrew “Nick” Nicholas, Jr.; three stepchildren  Anthony (Teresa) Nicholas, Yvonne (Emory) Carter and Andrea Nicholas; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren of San Antonio, TX; her brother Kenneth Bess of Germany; sisters Theolinda Jackson of New Jersey and Donna Bess of New York. She is also survived by her uncle George “Mickey” Bess of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; aunt Lydia Bess of New Mexico; four nephews (Sheldon and Kenneth Jr. of Kansas, Andre of Florida and Jamal of New Jersey); two nieces (Shalama “Cheri” of South Carolina and Vanessa of Germany); her adopted mother Doris Taylor, two adopted sisters Lorna Harley and Ishia Taylor of Florida along with many cousins and hosts of relatives and friends.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4, 2013 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. from Lewis Funeral Home, 811 South W.W. White Rd.
